Spanish Restaurant Reservation Timing

Tell us when you'd like to eat, your party size, and which city. We tell you the right booking time, whether you'll be eating alone or with locals, and how to dodge the early-bird tourist slot.

What this tool does

Spain's eating rhythm looks exotic from the outside but is mechanical once you understand it. Lunch is a long sit-down affair (14:00–16:00), most businesses close for "siesta" (15:00–17:00 in some), and dinner doesn't start for most people until 21:00. Tourists book dinner at 19:00 because that's when their home culture eats — and arrive to an empty restaurant with a tired waiter.

This tool gives you the right hour, lead time and channel (phone, web, walk-in) for the restaurant style you want.

Frequently asked questions

Is siesta real in 2026?

Siesta has shrunk. Most shops and restaurants in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao close 16:00–17:00 for staff rest. In Sevilla and smaller Andalusian towns, more businesses close through 17:00 or 18:00. Tour guides still use the word, but most office workers are back at their desks by 17:00 in big cities.

Do restaurants close on Sundays?

Many do, especially smaller traditional ones. In big cities most stay open but with reduced hours. Always check the specific restaurant's website. The chain "restaurantes de menú" often close Sunday evenings.

What's "El Cierre"?

Slang for "after the bar closes". Many locals do a quick last drink at 02:00–03:00 at a bar that stays open late. The menu is usually reduced — sandwiches, embutido, sometimes pincho de tortilla.

Is TheFork reliable in Spain?

Yes — it's the same platform as OpenTable, well integrated in Spain. Look for "Oferta -30%" or "-50%" promos. The discount is real but the booking is committed — no-show penalties can apply.

Limitations

Hour ranges are typical. Some contemporary restaurants (Dabba Madrid,Disfrutar Barcelona) push a 20:30 service that ends at 23:00. Sidrerías in Asturias run tables at 14:00 and 22:00 only. Always check the specific restaurant's posted hours before relying on the recommendation.
